As an Assistant Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, I specialize in interdisciplinary coursework that bridges the allied fields of Landscape and Architecture. My research draws from environmental ethics, psychology, and philosophy to explore architecture as a cultural and environmental practice.
My research centers environmental ethics, environmental psychology, philosophy, and human geography. I am interested in exploring the history and philosophies of science, technology, and design to examine how architecture plays a conscious role in cultural production and the creation of new practices for engaging with environments. Additionally, I enjoy speculative world-building projects that envision "landscape-machine" relationships, where landscapes generate architecture and architecture gives rise to new forms of landscape and environmental relationships.
I am interested in understanding the emotional impact that environmental imagery and representation has on our relationships to, upon, and within the world. I explore the power and potential of storytelling to unveil new perspectives on environmental aesthetics in order to reveal the ethics of our relations to the 'other,' especially the nonhuman and marginalized. This work aims to inspire hope and generate new imagination about the future of landscapes, ecologies, and forming uplifting, healing, and positive social reparations.
My work is inspired and motivated by the work of a number of individuals, friends, and colleagues, including Ed Eigen, Evan Douglis, Rhett Russo, Mae-ling Lokko, Elaine Stokes, Andreea Vasile Hoxha, Rawan Al Saffar, Weaam Al Abdullah, Jeremy Kamal Hartley, Hannah Gaengler, William Virgil, Samantha Solano, Alberto deSalvatierra, Zannah Matson, Susan Herrington, Lorraine Daston, Chris Perry and Cathryn Dwyer, Max Liboiron, Octavia E. Butler, Ray Bradbury, Ursula le Guin -- and others.
Thank you.
